McCormick joined the Hayneville Guards, a militia unit, in 1859 along with his future brother-in-laws Octavius Augustus Powell and Mark Allen Powell. Most of the Hayneville Guards were enrolled for Confederate service on  April 17, 1861 at Braggs Store, Lowndes County Alabama in Captain Willingham's Company that went to Montgomery Alabama and on Monday, May 6, 1861 became Company E, 6th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment.  McCormick's name appears on a muster in Roll dated June 30, 1861 at Fairfax Virginia. The Company became Company M, after the re-organization and enlistment in the Army of Northern Virginia in March 1862 at Yorktown Virginia. Compiled Service Record indicates he received pay at Fairfax Virginia on June 30, 1861, Union Mills Virginia October 31, 1861. He was wounded in the right hand at Chancellorsville Virginia on  May 2, or 3, 1863.  First his hand was removed then further up his arm as gangrene set in.  Taken to General Hospital No. 18 where his right arm was amputated at the shoulder by his uncle, Dr. Posey, who came from Alabama to take car of him.  From that summer of 1863 until the end of the war, McCormick was placed on the rolls of the Invalid Corps and spent the remainder on various duty, but mainly at home in Lowndes County. He received pay at Orange Courthouse, Virginia on April 1, 1864 and Bunker Hill, Virginia on June 30, 1864, Confederate pension dated July 6, 1909 to November 24, 1920, roll number 32182.

McCormick died from Locomyotopia  three weeks before the birth of his grandson, Lawrence Lenoir Pruitt.

On Feb. 5, 2003, James D. Allen, creator of this website passed away
There is no doubt that he would want the work on the
6th Alabama Infantry to go on.
With that in mind, this site is dedicated to him.
We miss you, Jimmy.
