9th) Nathaniel Pruitt born April 17,
1888; died February
12, 1889, Fort Deposit, Lowndes County Alabama. McCormick joined the Hayneville Guards, a militia unit, in 1859 along
with his future brother-in-laws Octavius
Augustus Powell and Mark Allen Powell. Most of the Hayneville
Guards were enrolled for Confederate service on April 17, 1861 at
Braggs Store, Lowndes County Alabama in Captain Willingham's Company that
went to Montgomery Alabama and on Monday, May 6, 1861 became Company E,
6th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment. McCormick's name appears on
a muster in Roll dated June 30, 1861 at Fairfax Virginia. The Company
became Company M, after the re-organization and enlistment in the Army of
Northern Virginia in March 1862 at Yorktown Virginia. Compiled Service
Record indicates he received pay at Fairfax Virginia on June 30, 1861,
Union Mills Virginia October 31, 1861.
He was wounded in the right hand at Chancellorsville Virginia
on May 2, or 3, 1863. First his hand was removed then further
up his arm as gangrene set in. Taken to General Hospital
No. 18 where his right arm was amputated at the shoulder by his
uncle, Dr. Posey, who came from Alabama to take car of
him. From that summer of 1863 until the end of the war, McCormick
was placed on the rolls of the Invalid Corps and spent the remainder on
various duty, but mainly at home in Lowndes County. He received pay at
Orange Courthouse, Virginia on April 1, 1864 and Bunker Hill,
Virginia on June 30, 1864, Confederate pension dated July 6, 1909 to
November 24, 1920, roll number 32182.
McCormick died from Locomyotopia three weeks before the birth of
his grandson, Lawrence Lenoir Pruitt. Contributions
