MR. ROY M. SHOFFNER
Mr. Roy M. Shoffner, 82, of
Enterprise, died Tuesday, January 25, 2000,
at Medical Center Enterprise.
Services will be held Thursday, January 27,
at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church Enterprise
with the Rev. Tim Floyd and Dr. Frank Wells
officiating. Burial will follow at
Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home
directing.
Mr. Shoffner will be placed in the church one
hour prior to service time. The family will
receive friends at Searcy Funeral Home
tonight, Wednesday, January 26, from 6-8
p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia O.
Shoffner of Enterprise; one son and
daughter-in-law, Jim and Brenda
Shoffner of Walton Beach, Florida; two
grandsons, Andrew Shoffner of Walton
Beach, Florida, and Kevin Shoffner of
Walton Beach, FLorida; two sosters, Nellie
Mae French of Whitesville, Kentucky, and
Mary Jane Howard of Crestview,
Florida.
Mr. Shoffner was a former editor and
publisher of the Enterprise Ledger, former
Enterprise city councilman, and author of a
popular history of Enterprise.
He was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky, on
January 25, 1918. He served with the U.S.
Army in Europe and Africa for three years
during World War II, earning eight battle
stars and a Purple Heart.
He moved to the Enterprise area in 1950 and
worked for three years as director pf the
Training Film Library at what was then Camp
Rucker. He began working for the Enterprise
Ledger in 1954. In 1955 he was named editor,
then in 1977 he was appointed publisher. He
retires in November 1984.
Mr. Shoffner served on the Enterprise City
Council from 1964-1972. He was named
Enterprise's Man of the Year in 1965. He
also served on the Enterprise Planning
Commission and the Enterprise Bicentennial
Commission. He was general chairman of the
Enterprise Diamond Jubilee and historical
committee chairman of the Enterprise National
Bicentennial. He was also active in the
local chapter of the Veteran's of Foreign
Wars, the Enterprise Lions CLub and numerous
other civic organizations and served seven
times as president of the Pea River
Historical and Genealogical Society.
He is the author of "Dateline: Enterprise," a
memoir of his life in newspapers, and "Pest
of Honor," a history of Enterprise's famous
Boll Weevil Monument. In 1996 he published a
history of the city itself, "Enterprise: The
First 110 Years, 1882-1992."
