Cleburne County was formed from portions of Calhoun, Randolph, and Talladega Counties, Cleburne County was created by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1866. The county was named for Major General Patrick R. Cleburne. The county seat was established at Edwardsville, but moved to Heflin in 1906.
The western portion of the county is part of the Talladega National Forest.
