Slovan Pioneer Passes Away - by Milan M Tomich, Financial-Secretary of Napredak, Lodge No 46, SFN, Slovan, PA, Feb 1967

SLOVAN, Pa -- It is with deep regret that 'Napredak' Lodge No. 46, S.N.F., of Slovan, Pa. reports the passing away of one of its staunchest supporting pioneer members, Simo Visnich.

Brother Simo, being of a rugged constitution, was not the type of individual, who would remain in retirement for any appreciable length of time. To this end, he acquired himself a light job at the Washington County Home in nearby Washington, Pa. (about 17 miles). While enroute to his present job, on the morning of January 24, 1967, he was struck by an auto in front of his home in Slovan, sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed to Washington Hospital in Washington, Pa., where he finally succumbed at 10 a.m. on January 31, 1967. During this critical seven-day period, he clung tenaciously to life, in typical Serbian fashion, indicative of the the Serbian pioneers' characteristic traits. Throughout Simo's hard-working life, he met his obligations squarely, making certain that all debts were paid, characterizing his honesty and integrity.

Simo was born May 12, 1888 in Rajak, Dubrave, Yugoslavia. He came to America in 1905 and settled in McKeesport, Pa., where he met and later married Milica Mamula. Three of their ten children, Mrs. Sadie Stipanovich of Youngstown, Mrs. Zarie Hennon of McDonald, Pa., and Mrs. Bessie Vuksanovich of Slovan, were born in McKeesport, prior to their move to Slovan in 1918.

In 1923, Simo joined 'Napredak' Lodge No. 46, where he has continually been active up to his untimely death. He had been president and lately vice-president of Lodge No. 46. His lodge activities were somewhat curtailed in later years, but his interest in the lodge never once waned.

Brother Simo was laid to rest in Mount Prospect Cemetery in Hickory, Pa. on February 3, 1967. A very touching eulogy was given in the funeral home in Burgettstown, Pa. by the parish priest of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Chruch of Steubenville, Ohio, where Simo was a member. Arrangements were made by the family, and capably assisted by the Treasurer of Lodge No. 46, Lazo Tomich, in acquiring the priest of Simo's parish. Milan Tomich, Financial-Secretary of Lodge No. 46 and 2nd Vice President of the Serb National Federation, rendered the fraternal eulogy at the graveside, on behalf of Lodge No. 46. The fraternalistic spirit was indeed exemplified at this funeral, as many of our lodge members came to the funeral to pay their last respects to our departed brother.

Simo had worked at the American Zinc and Chemical Co. in the neighboring town of Langeloth, Pa. from 1918 to 1947, when the plant was closed. Later he worked as janitor at the Burgettstown High School, and subsequently at the present job at the Washington County Home.

Surviving brother Simo are his wife Milica (Mamula) Visnich, and the following ten children--Mrs. Sadie Stipanovich of Youngstown, Mrs. Zarie Hennon of McDonald, Pa., Mrs. Bessie Vuksanovich of Slovan, Milan of Burgettstown, Sam, Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif., William of Bridgeville, Pa., George of Phoenix, Arizona, Theodore of Slovan, Olga of Slovan, and Rudy of St. Louis, Mo. There are also 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Four of Simo's children are members of 'Napredak' Lodge No. 46, while five of the grandchildren are members of Jr. Order No. 13 in Slovan, Pa. The oldest daughter, Mrs. Sadie Stipanovich of Youngstown, Ohio, is the Eastern Regional President of the Circle of Serbian Sisters, and quite active in Serbian affairs, along with her husband Ted. Three of Simo's sons have also fared well -- William is the Elementary Schoolprincipal at Chartiers Valley School in Bridgeville, PA, Rudy is a customer representative for Honeywell Corp in St Louis, MO, and Theodore is assistant foreman of the West Penn Power Co in Burgettstown, PA.

The officers and members of 'Napredak' Lodge No. 46 and its Junior Order No 13 of Slovan extend its sincerest condolences to the bereaved family and relatives of our deceased brother, Simo. May his soul have eternal peace.
