HOAR/ORR Obituaries

I've been told that my branch of the HOAR/ORR family changed the spelling to ORR because my great great aunt, Anna Sample Orr, didn't like the connotation that might be taken from the pronunciation of HOAR.

Mrs Anna Orr, 2305 Adams Ave, Dunmore, widow of William Orr, died Sat at home after a brief illness. Born in Elmhurst, she was a daughter of the late James & Frances Dingee Sample. Mrs Orr was a communicant of St Paul's Church & a member of its women's societies. Surviving are three daughters, Frances at home, Mrs Harold McDowell of Scranton & Mrs Donald MacRae of Asheville, NC; two sons, James of Scranton & Willard of NY; a sister, Mrs LE Farley of Scranton; three brothers, James & George Sample of Dunmore & Frank of Morristown, NJ; 11 grandchildren & 1 g grandchild. Funeral Weds from the home with mass in St Paul's; St Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. (no pallbearer information found)

Mrs Ella F Orr, 2454 N Washington Ave, died unexpectedly Weds at the Lake Winola summer home of her daughter, Mrs Frank P Clarke Jr. Her husband, James F, chief dispatcher at the old Dunmore yards of the Erie Railroad, died in 1964. Born in Minooka, daughter of the late William & Margaret Brennan Martin, she lived in Green Ridge 55 years. Member St Clare's Church. Also survived by a son, William J of Joliett, IL; four grandchildren, two g grandchildren; a sister, Mrs Frank Walsh of Trenton, NJ; nieces & nephews. Funeral Sat from the Thomas J Hughes FH, 1240 St Ann St; St Paul's Church; St Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.

James F Orr, 2454 N Washington Ave, retired chief dispatcher of the Wyoming & Jefferson Division of the former Erie Railroad, died yesterday at home after a long illness. Mr Orr retired in May 1960 after a career of 50 years in railroading with service on the Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railroad (Laurel Line), the former Lackawanna Railroad, the Pennsylvania Railroad & the former Erie. Born in Elmhurst, son of the late William & Anna Sample Orr, he started his career as an office boy in the superintendent's ofice on the Laurel Line & later became a telegrapher for the Pennsylvania & later a trainman for the Lackawanna. During WWI Mr Orr served in France with the 39th Railroad Engineers & returned to his former job with the Lackawanna Railroad following his discharge. In 1920 Mr Orr became a telegrapher & dispatcher for the Erie & in 1932 he was made yardmaster at Jessup, Avoca & Dunmore. He became chief dispatcher in 1954. Mr Orr was a memebr of the Erie Veteran's Assoc, the Purple Club, McHugh-Bushweller Post, VFW, Dunmore & St Paul's Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Ella Martin; a daughter, Mrs Frank Clark of Scranton; a son, William of Levittown; a brother, Willard of Scranton; three sisters, Mrs Harold McDowell & Mrs Frank P Gilroy, both of this city & Mrs Donald MacRea of Fayetteville, NC; four grandchildren; nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Cusick FH, 217 Jefferson Ave; St Paul's Church; St Catherine's Cemetery.

Mrs Theresa Hoar, formerly of 836 E Locust St, died yesterday in Columbia Hospital, Columbia, PA. A native of this city, she was a daughter of the late John & Anna Bahen Sullivan & wife of Thomas Hoar, retired Lackawanna Railroad engineer. Mrs Hoar was a member of St John the Evangelist Church and its Altar & Rosary Society. Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Mrs Joan McMahon, wife of Dr TA McMahon Jr, Avoca dentist; two sons, Gerard of Hollywood, CA Richard of Philadelphia; a sister, Mrs Mary Donnelly of Bighamton; 10 grandchildren, nieces & nephews. Funeral Friday from the McCrea Funeral Home, 1900 Pittston Ave; St John the Evangelist Church; St Catherine's Cemetery.

The death of Thomas Hoar, 70 yr old, occured yesterday afternoon at his home, rear 923 Taylor Ave, after a short illness. Two sons, William & Thomas and a daughter, Mrs Patrick O'Hora; and one sister, Mrs Romayne Snyder (sic).

Thomas J Hoar, 75, formerly of E Locust St, died yesterday in Mountain Rest Home after an illness. A retired Lackawanna Railroad engineer, he had been employed by the carrier half a century. Mr Hoar was noted for his memory along the entire Lackawanna Railroad system as it existed when he worked for the firm. He could tell without hesitation the date a certain type of engine was placed in service, its number & the name of the first man at the throttle. He retired from the railroad in Mar 1955. Born in Moscow, 5 Feb 1887, he entered the service of the Lackawanna Railroad in 1905. His wife, the former Theresa Sullivan, died 30 Jan 1962. Mr Hoar was a member of St John the Evangelist Church & its Holy Name Society. Survubg are a daughter, Mrs Joan McMahon, wife of Dr TA McMahon, a dentist in Avoca; two sons, Gerard of Hollywood, CA & Richard of Syracuse, NY; 11 grandchildren & several nieces & nephews. Funeral Weds from the McCrea Funeral Home, 1900 Pittston Ave; St John the Evangelist Church, St Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.

Weds 15 May 1962; Pallbearers: Francis & Thomas McAndrew, Frank J Ward, Hubert Pfahler, Arthur Bauman, & Ralph J Evans, all members of the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers.

William Orr, retired DL&W Railroad conductor, died this morning at the family home, 2305 Adams Ave, following a brief illness. Mr Orr was born in Tunkhannock & made his home in Scranton for many years. He was employed by the Lackawanna Railroad for 45 years, retiring three years ago. The was a conductor on fast freight trains. Mr Orr was a member of St Paul's Church & its Holy Name Society. Surviving are his wife and the following sons & daughters: James, general yardmaster of the Erie Railroad Co at Avoca; Harold & Willard of NY; Mrs JH Dowell (sic) of Scranton; Mrs Donald MacRae of Asheville, NC & Frances at home; also a brother, Thomas Orr (sic) of Scranton. Funeral Sat in St Paul's Church; St Catehrine's Cemetery, Moscow.

Sat 21 June 1941; Pallbearers: Harold & James O'Hora, George Sample, Edward McNamara, William Orr, & Joseph Boylan.
