One of Scranton's men who was active in the development of the city was Col J A Price, who came to Scraton in 1866 at at the age of twenty-two. He was born in Irvington, NJ, and soon after with his parents moved to West Pittston. He at once entered actively into the business life of the community. He was prominent in the organization of the Scranton Stove Works, fifty years ago and in 1868, he entered the wholesale lumber business, as a member of the firm of Swan & Price. Later that firm became Price & Howarth.

Mr Price was an organizer of the Scranton Board of Trade and until his death took an active part in the affairs of that organization, serving several years as its president. He died suddenly in 1892, and the entire community mourned his loss.
