Rev Thomas M Jordan

Rev Thomas M Jordan, pastor of the Church of St Catherine of Alexandria (sic), Moscow, is highly respected throughout Lackawanna County. He was born at Dunmore, PA, 29 Oct 1880, a son of Patrick and Bridget (O'Horo) Jordan.

Both Patrick Jordan and his wife were natives of County Mayo, Ireland, and came to this country during their youth. Their marriage took place at Dunmore, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Mr Jordan was a miner in the employ of the Pennsylvania Coal Company. He died in 1897 and his widow died in 1920. Both are buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Dunmore. Mr Jordan held membership in St Mary's Catholic Church and belonged to the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Nine children were born to Mr and Mrs Jordan as follows: Patrick, lives at Dunmore; William, an engineer with the Pennsylvania Coal Company; Frank, who is manager of Moosic Lake, PA; Rev Edward, mention of whom is made below; Thomas M, the subject of this sketch; John and Michael, both deceased; Mary, married to P J Conroy, lives at Dunmore; and Catherine, who is housekeeper for her brother, Rev Thomas M Jordan.

Edward Jordan was educated in the public and high schools of Dunmore. He attended St Thomas College, Scranton, Mt St Mary's College, Emmettsburg, MD, and then entered the American College at Rome, Italy, where he received the STD degree. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1909 in Rome by Cardinal Respiglosi. Upon his return to the United States Reverend Jordan was a member of the faculty of Mt St Mary's College for six years, and then was transferred to Washinton, DC, where he is now assistant professor of Psychology of Education in the Catholic University. He is also secretary of the Sisters College in Washington, and an instructor in Psychology at Trinity College.

Thomas M Jordan spent his boyhood at Dunmore and in 1898 was graduated from Dunmore High School. Three years later he completed a course at St Thomas College, Scranton, and then entered Mt St Mary's College, from which he was graduated in 1904 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He received the Master of Arts degree from that college two years later, and prepared for the priesthood at Mt St Mary's Ecclesiastical Seminary, being ordained on 16 Jun 1908 in the college chapel by Bishop Hoban. He was then made assistant to Father Hanley at Honesdale, PA, and in 1910 was transferred to Plains, PA, as assistant to Rev P J Colligan, pastor of Sacred Heart Church. The following year Reverend Jordan became chaplain of the Providence Infirmary in the Diocese of Mobile and in 1912 went to Plymouth, PA, as assistant to Rev P J Colligan of St Vincent's Church. (sic) In 1921 he was appointed pastor of St Aloysius Church at Ralstron (sic), PA, and remained there until 15 Sep 1926, at which date he came to Moscow as pastor of St Catherine's Church.

Reverend Jordan is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, Council No 984, 4th degree, being Faithful Navigator of that Assembly, and is president and treasurer of St Catherine's Cemetery Association.
