Patrick J Horan

Patrick J Horan, deceased, was born in Ireland in 1844, the son of Patrick and Catherine (Ford) Horan. Patrick Horan brought his family to the United States from Ireland in about 1845 and settled in Carbondale, PA, where he entered the mines of the Delaware & Hudson Coal Company. He was later appointed tip-staff by Judge Handley, and at the expiration of his term retired. He married Catherine Ford, who died 1 Jul 1896. They were the parents of five children: Anthony, d 30 Sep 1896; Patrick J, father of the subject of this sketch (sic); Bridget, deceased; Michael J, deceased; and Ann, deceased, was the wife of John Duffy.

Patrick J Horan worked in the coal mines of Dunmore in early life and later was associated with the firm of Bryden Brothers & Cooper, as weighmaster. He then was employed by Williamson & Company, and in 1870, in partnership with the late M J Healey, formed the firm of Horan & Healey. In 1881 Mr Horan purchased the stock and store of the Hindsell Clothing Company, Scranton, which he conducted for three years. He was also one of the organizers of the wholesale firm of T J Kelly & Co, which operated until 1905. In 1896 Messrs Horan, Manley and Swift organized The Limited Cash Stores of Dunmore. Mr Horan also incorporated The Union Cash Stores, of which he served as president. He was interested in the Mississippi Central Railroad Company, one of the incorporators of the United States Lumber Company, president of the Fidelity Deposit & Discount Bank, president of the Scranton Packing Company, director of the First National Bank of Scranton, director of the Lackawanna Trust Company, director of the Economy Light & Heat Company, director of the Eureka Specialty Company, and director of the Consumers Ice Company. He was also one of the organizers of the Lackawanna Lumber Company. Mr Horan was beloved and respected by all who knew him and did much to promote the growth and prosperity of Dunmore. He died 4 Jul 1918. His wife is also deceased. She was prominent in philanthropic work in the city and for many years served as president of St Joseph Society. Mrs Horan was a sister of Bishop Garvey of Altoona, PA, Dr James B Garvey of Dunmore, and Catherine (Garvey) Curtin, of Dunmore. To Mr and Mrs Horan were born two children (sic): James G, insurance agent, Scranton PA; Grace, who married John O D Mangan, of West Pittston, PA; and Clare, deceased, was the wife of Matthew Cawley.
