Rt Rev Michael J Hoban

Rt Rev Michael J Hoban, late bishop of Scranton, was born at Waterloo, NJ, 6 Jun 1853, and attended private schools until he was 14 years of age. He then spent a year at St Francis Xavier's College, New York; three years at Holy Cross College, Worchester, MA; attended St John's College, New York; and in 1874 entered St Charles Seminary in Philadelphia. He was sent to the American College in Rome in 1875 by Rt Rev Bishop O'Hara, and was ordained as a priest in St John Lateran Church, Rome, 22 May 1880, by H E Cardinal Monaco La Valletta. During that year Reverend Hoban was appointed assistant to Rev Dr Charles F Kelly, at Towanda, PA, and two years later transferred to Pittston, PA, where he served as assistant to V Rev John Finnen, VD. In 1885 he was appointed pastor of St John's Church at Troy, PA; and two years later organized the parish of St Leo at Ashley, PA. He was selected by His Holiness, Leo XIII, to be bishop of Alali and coadjutor to Bishop O'Hara, with right of succession. He was appointed by Papal brief, dated 1 Feb 1896, and consecrated by Cardinal Satolli in St Peter's Cathedral, Scranton, on 22 Mar 1896. On the death of the Venerable Bishop O'Hara, 3 Feb 1899, Rev Hoban succeeded as bishop of Scranton, and served in this capacity until his death, which occurred on 13 Nov 1926.
