Rt Rev Bishop M J Hoban will officiate at the dedication of the new St Bridget's Catholic Church, Throop, next Sunday. St Bridget's is a mission church of St Thomas, Dickson City. Rev Hugh Geraghty is rector of the the Dickson City church and Rev Peter McHugh is curate. Te new mission is in the charge of Fr McHugh and has been in service some months. THere is a seating capacity of 300, far larger than now needed by Throop's 25 English-speakng families. Prior to St Bridget's they had to attend services in Dickson City or Dunmore, and have shown their appreciation for the new edifice by already subscribing to over half its cost. At the services, Rev Peter McHugh will be the celebrant; Rev John Cox, deacon; Rev Thomas J Comerford, subdeacon; Rev J J Ruddy, archpriest; Dr P C Winters, deacon of honor; Rev Dr Brennan, master of ceremonies; Rev P J O'Donnell of Inkerman will preach.

The new building was originally built by Rev Moses Whitty at Bloom's Patch in 1858 and was the first Catholic church in north Scranton or what is now Holy Rosary Parish. It was in those days St Thaddeus' Church. At that time Fr Whitty was rector of the church in Central City, now St Peter's Cathedral. He later went to Holy Rosary as pastor.

In 1886 the Bloom's Patch church was torn down, a roomier one having been built some years before on Williams Street for Holy Rosary parish. Fr Kernan was administrator of the parish at that time, Fr Whitty having died and Fr N J McManus not yet named pastor. The church was moved to Dickson City, where it did duty under the name St Thomas, up to a couple of years ago when Fr Geraghty set about building a fine new stone church. Realizing the inconveniences to which the Throop people were being subjected, Fr Geragty had the old church moved to Throop, where it now stands, after having been three times rebuilt and renamed, and after having done almost sixty years of duty as a church.
