These come from a variety of sources, but unless otherwise noted can be found in Msgr Gallagher's history of the diocese. Changes in the political arena are also important in determining where to look for early records, and some political changes are included in blue.

  • Carbondale Township created from parts of Blakely and Greenfield Twps
1832
  • Fr Clancy relocates his pastoral base from Silver Lake to Carbondale, the larger community, until his departure in 1834
1834 -1836
  • No replacement pastor available; NEPA once again relies on occasional tours by missioners and the Bishop of Philadelphia

  • St Francis Xaviar, Friendsville (Susquehanna), dedicated
1836
  • Jefferson Township created from part of Blakely Twp
  • St Augustine's, Silver Lake (Susquehanna), dedicated
  • St Rose of Lima, Carbondale, which had been built in 1830 under the leadership of Fr Clancy, dedicated; Fr Henry F Fitzsimmons appointed pastor
1838
  • Benton Township created from part of Nicholson Twp
  • St Juliana's, Rock Lake (Wayne), dedicated
  • St Basil's, Dushore (Sullivan), dedicated, and Fr Nicholas Steinbacher, a German Jesuit missioner, asked to include the church in his rounds to meet the needs of German parishioners
  • Fr John Vincent O'Reilly appointed pastor of Friendsville-Silver Lake
1841
  • Fr Andrew Sullivan, missioner working out of Lowerytown (Carbon) says the first mass for families of Slocums Hollow.
1842
  • St Mary's, Wilkes-Barre (Luzerne), dedicated
  • St John's, Honesdale (Wayne), dedicated
  • St Rose of Lima, Carbondale, enlarged
1845
  • Fr Patrick A Prendergast appointed first pastor of St John's, Honesdale
  • Carbondale pastorate changed to joint Carbondale/Wilkes-Barre pastorate under Fr Fitzsimmons
1846
  • Scott Township created from part of Greenfield Twp
1847
  • Fr Rudolph Etthofer appointed pastor of Immaculate Conception, Bastress (Lycoming), with responsibility for the German communities of Dushore and Wilkes-Barre as well
  • Fr Prendergast appointed pastor of Carbondale/Wilkes-Barre
  • St Bonaventure's, Slocum Hollow, dedicated; named for an Italian saint, so as to show no partiality between the cooperating Irish and German communities
  • Combination church and school built in Lanesboro (Susquehanna)
1848
  • Slocum Hollow, an unincorporated village in Providence Twp, renamed Harrison
  • Fr John Loughran appointed first pastor of St Bonaventure's, Harrison
  • Fr Richard O'Connor appointed pastor of St Mary's, Wilkes-Barre, allowing Fr Prendergast to concentrate on St Rose's of Carbondale, the oldest and then most important of the pastorates

  • Borough of Providence incorporated from part of Providence Twp
1851
  • City of Carbondale incorporated from part of Carbondale Twp
1852
  • Borough of Hyde Park incorporated from part of Providence Twp
  • Fr James McNaughton appointed pastor of Dushore
  • Fr James Cullen appointed pastor of St Bonaventure's, Harrison, with an assignment to build a larger, more centrally located church for the combined population of Harrison, Hyde Park, Providence and Dunmore
  • St Joseph's College, St Joseph (Susquehanna), established by Fr O'Reilly, with Fr Fitzsimmons reassigned from Pottsville as one of the instructors
1853
  • St Mary's, Pittston (Luzerne) becomes a pastorate
  • St Andrew's, Blossburg (Tioga) becomes a pastorate
  • Fr Casper Mueller appointed first pastor of St Mary Magdalene's, Honesdale (Wayne)
  • St Vincent de Paul, Harrison, completed, allowing St Bonaventure's to become a German mission church of Fr Mueller
  • St John Nepomucene, Susquehanna Depot (Susquehanna) completed
1854
  • St Juliana's, Rock Lake (Wayne) becomes a pastorate
  • Fr Moses Whitty appointed pastor of St Vincent de Paul's, Harrison
1855
  • St Philomena's, Hawley (Wayne), becomes a pastorate
1856
  • Harrison incorporated as a borough from part of Providence Twp and renamed Scranton
  • St Simon's, Dunmore, becomes a pastorate
  • St Joseph's Academy for Girls, St Joseph (Susquehanna), established
1857
  • St Boniface, Williamsport (Lycoming), becomes a German pastorate
1858
  • Fr O'Reilly appointed first pastor of St John Nepomucene, Susquehanna Depot; relocates Lanesboro school to near St John's
  • St Nicholas, Wilkes-Barre (Luzerne), becomes a German pastorate
  • St Thomas Aquinas, Archbald, becomes a pastorate
  • St Joseph's Academy for Girls becomes the first school run in Pennsylvania by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM)
1859
  • St Thaddeus Chapel, Providence, built
1860
  • St Alphonus Academy, Susquehanna Depot, the second IHM school in NEPA, established; renamed Laurel Hill Academy in 1862
1861
  • St John Nepomucene first parish in the area to boast church, rectory, convent, social hall, grade school and high school; in recognition of his talents, Fr O'Reilly named Rural Dean over all of the instituions and religious of the area and appointed to the Curia of the Diocese
1862
  • Borough of Dunmore incorporated from part of Providence Twp
  • St John's Parochial School, Susquehanna Depot, first NEPA community school, established by the IHM;
1864
  • St Joseph's College destoyed by fire, also leading to the closing of St Joseph's Academy two years later
1866
  • City of Scranton incorporated from the boroughs of Scranton, Hyde Park, Providence, and the last of Providence Twp
1867
  • Borough of Blakely incorporated from part of Blakely Twp
1868
  • Diocese of Scranton created from the ten northeastern-most counties of the Diocese of Philadelphia: Bradford, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Wayne, and Wyoming
1870
  • Borough of Jermyn incorportated from part of Blakely Twp
1873
  • Clifton Township created from part of Covington Twp
1875
  • Borough of Dickson City incorporated from part of Blakely Twp
  • Diocese of Philadelphia raised to Archdiocese
1877
  • Boroughs of Archbald, Olyphant and Winton (later known as Jessup) incorporated from parts of Blakely Twp
1924
  • Creation of the Ruthenian Exarchate
