Nikolaevsk is the location of a settlement of "Old Believers," who emigrated from Russia to avoid persecution and for the freedom to practice their traditional religious beliefs. As growth occurred on the Kenai Peninsula during the 1980s and 1990s, several settlements have developed in the area.
