HEUGHAN, Robert- D19/12/1843 - At Glenluce, on the 19th inst., Mr Robert Heughan, aged 73.

HEUGHAN, Robert - D23/9/1863 - By the arrival of the foreign mail at Dalbeattie, letters, dated New Zealand, 23d September, were received by Mr William Heughan, smith, conveying the painful intelligence of the death of his eldest son, Robert Heughan, who was shot on the 7th Sept. along with two other Europeans - Mr Armitage, resident magistrate of the district, and Mr Strand, carpenter - in a sudden and unexpected attack made upon them by a band of hostile natives. It is only about eighteen months since young Mr Heughan left his native parish to seek a home in the distant colony. Since after his arrival there, a native chief came down to make application to the governor for a resident mechanic and engineer for his district. At the first interview, his prepossessing appearance and affable manner at once gained the esteem and affection of the chief, and he immediately received the appointment, with a monthly bounty in addition to the regular proceeds of his profession. After the country had become unsettled and hostilities with the natives were imminent, Mr Heughan was appointed clerk and assistant to Mr Armitage, with whom he was ever afterwards associated, and in whose company he was acting in the discharge of duty when the sad event occurred that terminated his useful life at the early age of 23. From a child, the deceased was remarkable for exactness of disposition and a gentle and winning manner. As years increased the early graces of youth knew no decay, but grew firmer and more beautiful, united to talent, thorough intergrity , and a maturity of Christian character rarely exemplified. Three letters - two from British settlers, and one from a native chief - brought the melancholy tidings; they breathe the deepest Christian sympathy, and speak of the deceased as a brother whom to know was only to love. The communication from the chief is particularly ad ------- in lamenting the death of his "dear friend" mourning "that he will see no more" the youth he loved. "who died carrying out the good intentions of the governor." To the deeply distressed family mourning this great calamity, it must be an ingredient of greatest comfort in their bitter cup of sorrow to know that their beloved son has struck a chord of grief in many a heart, and called forth the deepest sympathies of all who knew him; but best of all in the consolation derived from their well grounded hope that their loss is his eternal gain.
