Although he had been in poor health for some time Mr Kerr had only been confined to the house for a fortnight. HIs passing will remove a kent figure from the life of the old burgh. Born at Larbrax, Leswalt, 81 years ago, he, after receiving a thorough practical training in farming under his father, entered the farm of Palmallet. That was 55 years ago, and from that time he continued there till his retiral nine years since. During his long tenancy of Palmallet Mr Kerr was a most successful stock farmer and took a great interest in everything pertaining in agriculture. He also took his share in the public service of the community having been for many years a member of the Old School Board of Sorbie parish. For a long number of years he held with much acceptance the office of Chairman of the Garlieston Harbour Trust, but felt compelled to reliquish it owing to his hearing failing. He was also a much respected elder of Sorbie Parish Church for a long time. Bowling and curling were his chief sports and then going to live in Whithorn he was a member of the Whithorn Recreation Club and notwithstanding his age thoroughly enjoyed the games. During his long life Mr Kerr was most upright and honest in his dealings. Big in stature and big in heart he possessed a cheery disposition and had a jovial greeting for everyone. He was much respected and held in the highest esteem throughout the whole district. Left to mourn his loss are a widow and three daughters, his only son having been killed in the Great War. The Funeral took place to Whithorn Cemetery today (Thursday.)" Details from CWG Commission : In Memory of Private Charles Kerr, 267228, 8th BN. Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) who died aged 32 on Friday 19th July 1918. Private Kerr, son of William and Agnes Kerr, of Palmallet House, Whithorn, Wigtownshire. For many years he carried on business extensively as a general merchant, was a shrewd observer of men and things, and possessed a wonderful acute knowledge of markets and prices, including a wide range of the most varied commodities. For a longer period than we exactly know, he exported goods largely to Australia, visited the South as a purchaser periodically, not merely himself, but on account of others and in that capacity, made the acquaintance, and acquired the friendship of the leading commercial characters in the principal manufacturing towns of England. The bereavement thus noticed will create a blank, not only on the banks of the Fleet, but over broad Galloway; and there are many beside his family and relatives, who will regret the early removal of one whose untiring exertions land marked, commercially, the beautiful locality in which he drew the first breath of life and expired the last.
