Highly Recommended Mailing Lists |
||
This website evolved from the original volunteer list created by and for members of the RootsWeb sponsored Sct. Wigtownshire mailing list. The list itself is a relatively small one, but the measure of generosity, free exchange of ideas and resources, and happy occurrence of people making connections with those other researchers has made SCT-WIGTOWNSHIRE a cheerful, active list.
We encourage those who browse our web pages to consider joining a mailing list pertaining to their area of interest. All RootsWeb sponsored mailing lists are free. For those who have never tried a genealogy mailing list, it works like this: after subscribing you will receive a welcoming email and will start to receive emails from the mailing list. From there, you make the choice as to your level of commitment to the list. You may choose to 'lurk', meaning that you will read without comment, or you may choose to join in a discussion with an email of your own directed to the list. It is through these exchanges that we discover new approaches to research specific to the area, gain valuable insight from others experienced in researching the same name or parish, and establish connections in the genealogy community. In terms of safety, you can be assured that RootsWeb sponsored emails will never come with attachments, or viruses, as they have been filtered through RootsWeb's cautionary checks before landing in your inbox. This does not keep your inbox safe from receiving viruses from emails sent direct to you from individuals with whom you correspond outside of the safety of the list, but does guarantee that all emails direct from the list are free and clean. Now, not every message is going to help you find long lost Aunt Nellie, but you will expand your genealogical knowledge of the area, and discover new research skills, and aids, by simply reading. In turn, your comments to the list may be the key to dismantling another researcher's long-standing brick wall. In addition to our own mailing list, we note with appreciation other highly recommended neighbouring mailing lists for Scottish Researchers, below. Though there are many excellent lists devoted to Scottish research, we highlight these as they are close to our own county of Wigtownshire, or are general to research in Scotland. Generally speaking there are two formats to receive a mailing list: list or digest mode. Both modes are free, but digest mode will group several emails together as RootsWeb safe attachments within one post. If you prefer the digest mode, change the "L" within the email address to "D". One caution: not all mailings lists generate the same amount of traffic. It is prudent to start slowly subscribing to mailing lists, evaluating with each new addition the increase in your incoming mail. |
