BRIEF HISTORY

As early as 1864, Africans were brought to Pennsylvania to be purchased as slaves. Although slave labor was often used to clear land in the new settlement, some large plantations (or farms) did exist. Unlike the southern plantations where cotton, sugar cane, indigo and rice were grown, plantations in Pennsylvania primarily raised grains which were more suited to colder weather. Separate rooms within the planter's house were often, but not always, used to house slaves. Not only were slaves used for agricultural labor, the local iron was usually supported by slave labor.
