The church of Saints Peter, Paul and Mary at Westbury-on-Severn has a detached tower which was built circa 1270 as a garrison or watch-tower, heavily buttressed at the angles. The 14th Century spire, 160 feet high, is framed with a network of great oak beams from the Forest of Dean. It is covered entirely with wooden shingles held in place with copper nails. The church, which stands 50 feet away is not earlier than 1300. There is stained glass within by Clayton & Bell, Jones & Willis, Kempe & Tower.
