St. Lawrence's Church at Swindon Village in Outer Cheltenham was locked. I had no idea where to get the key but fortuitously the heads of two steeplejacks appeared at the top of the church tower. They were able to tell me where to get the key and I was able to gain entry. The church was mainly rebuilt in 1844 and 1846 but the very unusual hexagonal tower was built by the Normans in the 13th Century. There are grotesque Norman heads embedded in the new arches between the nave and aisles. One is shown here. The font is a fine specimen and dates back to 1450.
