Rodborough Parish Church

The Awdry window - incorporating a panel depicting 'Thomas the Tank Engine' - commemorates the creator of the famous children's books, the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry, 1911 - 1997, and his wife Margaret Emily Awdry, 1912 - 1989.

Rodborough church is set on the hillside above Stroud.
St Mary Magdalene's church was rebuilt in 1841-43 by Thomas Foster & Sons, apart from the early 16th C Perp west tower, Which has three stages, battlements, pinnacles and diagonal buttresses. The Fosters' church has good four-bay north and south arcades and a chancel arch. In 1895 Waller & Son rebuilt the chancel and extended the north and south aisles to flank it. The font is Perp style, circa 1842. There is stained glass in the church by J.F. Egan; Henry and Edward Payne; and Willement. There is also a colourful and contemporary stained glass window, to Rev. Wilbert Awdry, by Alfred Fisher - 1998. In the churchyard there are a number of good 17th C and 18th C chest tombs, some of the 'lyre-console' type with stone carved figures.
