The ancient church of St. Bartholomew is located near the hamlet of Newington in the parish of Newington Bagpath near Kingscote. It consists of a nave and chancel, south porch and a tower with a hipped roof. The church is currently disused but is undergoing restoration by a private owner.
The interior is gutted but the internal roof structure can be seen. There are headstones to the Worlock family in the overgrown graveyard. The church is based on an earlier Norman building and incorporates some of the original tufa limestone particularly in the area of the original, but now blocked, north - or Devil's - door. The church took on its present design, complete with stone carved heads of kings and queens at the bases of
the window arches on the exterior, in the mid 19th Century. The famous architect S.S. Teulon was responsible for this work. The property is currently in a forlorn state. When visiting this remote place a couple of squirrels were gambolling on the adjacent lane - otherwise there was no sign of life. As the lane continued on to Kingscote, it was lined by
typical Cotswold dry stone walling. Here we can see the use of 'combers' - the top course of stones laid on edge - to protect the underlying courses from rain and frost and to discourage sheep from straying on to the road.
