Kingscote Parish Church

St. John the Baptist's church has a Perpendicular style West tower of three stages, with embattled parapet and North-east stair-turret with spirelet; West window and doorway probably 16th Century. The church was much restored in 1851-56 by S.S. Teulon, and most of the windows are his. The North transept and adjoining North vestry appear to date from the early 19th Century, with panelled parapets and pinnacles. The chancel arch has two plain chamfered orders on sturdy semi-octagonal responds, probably late 13th Century. When Teulon rebuilt the chancel, he retained the small 13th Century lancets on either side of the West end. Good heavy chancel roof. There are stained glass windows in the church by Ward & Nixon, Kempe & Co., James Powell & Sons, and Wailes. The altar table was by Teulon but brought from the Newington Bagpath church. By the lychgate is a good 1914-18 War Memorial. Nearby Kingscote Manor was demolished in 1951. Only a few original garden walls and a gate lodge remain.
