The village of France Lynch grew as a settlement of cloth-workers on the edge of Bisley Common high above the mills on the River Frome.
The church was designed by the architect George Frederick Bodley and was built in 1855.
It was the first of Bodley's many churches and has distinctive features, a style that owes more to French than English Gothic - a tall bellcote, and an altar six steps higher than the nave.
In the church the font is made of Devonshire marble and has a cover ornamented with fine ironwork.
Elsewhere blue lapis lazuli and green malachite add colour to various stonework features.
The pillars of the four-bay arcade to the nave have stiff-leaf capitals, carved by London craftsmanThomas Earp. The same artist carved the angelic figure with musical instrument in the chancel. |
