Coates Parish Church

St. Matthew's Church is dominated by its particularly beautiful Perpendicular west tower dating from the early 15th Century. The tower is ashlar-faced and is of three stages with diagonal buttresses ending in quoin strips with crocketed pinnacles. There is an embattled parapet with gargoyles; and in the tower walls there are bell-openings with ogee crocketed hoodmoulds and pinnacles in low relief.
The interior of the church has stone-flagged floors and limewashed walls. There is stained glass by Lavers, Barraud & Westlake and also by Hardman; Clayton & Bell; and A. L. Wilkinson. The wall-mounted monument - with a small sentimental carving of mother and child - is to Mary Cator who died in 1929. This monument is signed Jean J. Tasse.
The font comprises a cylindrical bowl dating from circa 1200 and a chamfered stem and Perpendicular octagonal base dating from the 19th Century.
