Church, Candace Re: Pocahontas County Photo. 28Feb2001. personal email
--->
"...If anyone can identify anyone in the photo, I'd love to hear
from them.
Here is everything I know about the picture along with a little additional
information about some of the people. This picture was given to me by
my mother who identified it as being a picture of her mothers relatives.
She believes it was taken about 1900.
The seventh person from the right side of the picture, the woman wearing
a dark skirt and white top, is Stella Montgomery Gibson, my mother's
mother. The woman wearing a black dress, standing behind the pitcher
held by the man in the front of the picture, is probably Melinda
Rose. Other people my mother believes are in the picture include
Sarah E. Sharp; Virgie Lou Sharp; Rheuhanna Skidmore, Gertrude DeVolve;
Cordelia Warner; and Ella. Cordelia Warner was from Buckhannon,
the others were all from Slaty Fork.
I believe the occasion at which this picture was taken was a wedding
since the dress worn by the woman holding the flowers (fourth person
from left) appears to be a wedding dress.
Stella Montgomery Gibson, (b. 23 Mar 1881, Pocahontas Co., WV; d. 17
Nov 1954, Randolph Co., WV) was the daughter of Samuel M. Gibson and
Mary Jane Hannah. I know very little about Sam, other than that he kept
bees, had a long white beard, and had one wooden leg. He was born 22
Oct 1861 or 1858 and died 31 Aug 1942 in Pocahontas Co., WV. Sam is
buried, along with his second wife Emma, in Gibson Cemetery near Marlinton.
Mary Jane Hannah was the youngest daughter of David Hannah and Hester
Zickefoose (Sicafoose). Mary Jane was born 2 Jun 1860 in Pocahontas
Co., and died 30 Sep 1890. Mary Jane and Sam were married on 13 Apr
1880 in Pocahontas County. Stella was their only child. (Sam did have
several children with his second wife.) Melinda Rose and Sarah Sharp
were also daughters of David Hannah and Hester Zickefoose and, thus,
Stella's aunts. Melinda Hannah married John Rose. Sarah Hannah married
Silas Sharp. (Sarah and Silas were the parents of Luther D. Sharp, who
started a store called Sharp's Country Store which is still in operation
today.) After her sister Mary Jane died, Sarah raised Mary Jane's daughter
Stella. On 26 Mar 1902, Stella Gibson married Wade Hampton Fisher, of
Barbour Co., WV.
I have no information on who any of the men in the photo might be, although
I'd guess that the names Hannah, Sharp, and perhaps Gibson would be
represented."
