She was born Jan. 9, 1939, in Franklin to the late Arla Dahmer Sponaugle and Percy Carl Sponaugle.
Mrs. Sponaugle graduated valedictorian from Franklin High School in 1957. In high school she was named a Lady of the golden Horseshoe and was voted Most Likely to Succeed. Following high school, she completed a degree at Morgantown Business College.
In January 1959 she married Earl Judy Jr. The couple lived in Washington, D.C., where Betty worked for the FDIC.
Following the birth of her daughters, Carla and Pamela, she devoted herself to her home and family. The family lived in suburban Maryland where she was an active member of Good Shepherd Church of the Brethren. A talented cook, she began to create recipes and enter cooking contests. She was a six time finalist in The Pillsbury Bake Off, as well as a finalist numerous times in the Delmarva Chicken Cooking Contest, and continued to enter and win a variety of other contests.
In addition to cooking, Mrs. Judy enjoyed reading, sewing, collecting antique glassware and exploring the outdoors. In the 1980s, the family moved to the Fauquier County, VA, and then to Castleton in Rappahannock county in 1988. She enjoyed to travel and visited 48 states of the United States, six Canadian Provinces, 16 European countries and Puerto Rico. Her favorite trips included visiting her daughter in Greece, backpacking with her two daughters across Europe, taking an Alaskan cruise with her husband and numerous drives down the Blue Ridge Parkway.
In Castleton, VA, she and her husband are members at the Hazel River Assembly of God, where she was involved with the Women's Ministries. The Judys contributed to the founding of the Rappahannock County Public Library. In recent years, Mrs. Judy enjoyed taking care of and playing with her four grandchildren.
Mrs. Judy will be greatly missed by her husband, Earl Judy of Castleton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carla Nicole Martin and husbnad Thomas martin of Castleton, VA and Pamela Devon Lovell and husband, Rhys Lovell of Bloomington, IL; and four grandchildren, Connor Earl and Hollins Ford Martin and Carys Rose and William Auden Lovell; and a sister, Patsy Sponaugle of Louisville, KY.
A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Hazel River
Assembly of God Church, Rixeyville, VA, with the Rev. Stephen Dodson
officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memory Gardens.

Sonja L. Anderson
Sonja Lou Anderson, 55, of Gallatin Gateway, MT, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at the home of her mother in Franklin.
mrs. Anderson was born Aug. 7, 1950, in Franklin and was the daughter of Arvella Lambert Vandevander and the late John Clarence Vandevander.
She was employed at Upper Chesapeake Hospital and was a claims adjuster for Dental Network in Baltimore, MD, and Bozeman, MT. She attended White Sulphur Springs High School in Greenbrier County and was a member of Walnut Street United Methodist church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Henry David Anderson; a son, Daniel A. Anderson of Havre De Grace, MD; a step-son, Mathew D. Anderson of Joppa, MD; a brother, Gary M. Vandevander, and wife, Sharon of Lewisburg; and sister-in-law, Wanda Vandevander of Williamsburg, VA.
Also preceding her in death were one son, Christopher Wayne Anderson in 1999, and one brother, Larry Vandevander.
The Rev. Carl Tribett conducted the funeral Friday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Burial was at the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Helen E. Stewart, 80
Helen Elizabeth Puffenbarger Stewart, 80, of Mount Washington, KY, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006.
Mrs. Stewart was a native of Pendleton County and was the daughter of the late charles and Ivy Virginia Puffenbarger.
She was a homemaker and was a member of first Baptist church in Mount Wshington, KY.
She began her country music career in the 1940s, along with her sisters and brother, who were known as the "Puffenbarger Kids" at Radio Staion WSVA in Harrisonburg, VA. In 1948, the became members of the "Old dominion Barn Dance" in Richmond, VA, and in 1949, they joined the "Mid-Day Merry-Go-Round" on Station WNOX in Knoxville, TN. She was a member of the Carter Family Band and was a regular on WSM's "Grand Ole Opry."
Survivors include her husband, Billy H. Stewart; two sons, Mark and Kent Stewart; a daughter, Karen Stowers; two sisters, Bonnie Clatterbuck and Joan Shifflett; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
The funeral was held Monday at First Baptist Church, Mount Washington, KY. Burial was in Mount Washington Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Louisville.
