William “Andy” DePoy

William Anderson “Andy” DePoy, 46, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010, at his residence in Harrisonburg, VA.

Mr. DePoy was born on April 8, 1964, in Harrisonburg, VA, the son of Jack DePoy of Harrisonburg and the late Kittie Anderson DePoy (9-17-2009).

He was a 1982 graduate of Franklin High School, attended Fairmont State College, was a member of Franklin Moose #769, Harrisonburg Elks #452, and was a Presbyterian.  DePoy owned and operated A & J Excavating.

He married Amy B. Homan, who survives in Harrisonburg, VA.

Also surviving are two daughters, Hannah Byrd DePoy and Evelyn Carter DePoy, both of Harrisonburg, VA; two sisters, Kathie Brandt and husband, Randy of Fishersville, VA, and Ellen Golden and husband, Craig of Winchester, VA; two brothers, JC DePoy and wife, Annie, and Bobby Rowe and wife, Karen, both of Harrisonburg, VA.

Rev. Susie Echols and Pastor Tresa Quarles conducted graveside services on Wednesday at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Franklin.  A celebration of life was held at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg, VA, on Wednesday.

Dr. Samuel Bucher, 91

Dr. Samuel J. Bucher passed away May 21, 2010, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas.

He was born April 13, 1919, at Wrightsville, PA, so of the late Mabel Musselman Bucher and Bela L. Bucher.

Dr. Bucher graduated from Goshen College and Temple University Medical School.  He moved to Harman in 1946 and practiced medicine there until his retirement in 1990.  He served as medical director of Nella’s Nursing Home, Cortland Acres Nursing Home, the Davis Center and Randolph and Tucker County health departments.  He delivered several thousand babies, including his three grandsons.  He made house calls in Randolph and neighboring counties, even delivering triplets at home.  He maintained clinics in Harman, Davis and Riverton.  Dr. Bucher was a member of Riverside Mennonite Church.

His second wife, Kathryn Bucher of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, survives.  His first wife of 44 years, Margaret M. Mininger, preceded him in death on March 24, 1987.

Also surviving are two sons, S. Jonathan Bucher and wife, Esther of Morinville, Canada, and J. Daniel Bucher and wife, Judy of Harman; two daughters, Sarah Ellen Myers and husband, Herb of Mount Joy, PA, and Mary Beth Lind and husband, Lester of Philippi; one brother, John C. Bucher; two sisters-in-law, Florence Bucher and Eleanor Mininger; seven grandchildren, Karen Myers, Brenda Peachy, Janelle Myers-Benner, Anthony Bucher, Bonnie Tejada, Luke Bucher and Jason Bucher; and four great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Anna Lois Charles; brother, Harold Bucher; brother-in-law, Joe Mininger; sister-in-law, Gertrude Ziegler; and great-granddaughter, Nora Myers.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at at the Dry Fork Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Roy Good officiating.  Interment followed at Lanesville in the Lanesville Bethel Church Cemetery 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cortland Acres where Dr. Bucher was a founding board member for the future physician office building or to the Davis Health System Foundation.

Hinkle Funeral Home, Davis, was in charge of the arrangements.

Bruce P. Hedrick

Bruce P. Hedrick, of Arlington, VA, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Hedrick was born in Upper Tract on Oct. 1, 1931, the son of the late Alton Parker Hedrick and Mary Harold Hedrick Lough.

After the death of his father, he made his home with Victor and Zeno Harold Plaugher in Upper Tract.

Mr. Hedrick graduated from Franklin High School in 1949.  He received an AA degree from Lee Jr. College (now Lee University), Cleveland, TN, and a BS degree from University of Maryland, University College, College Park, MD.

He was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church of Alexandria, VA, the American Legion Post 30 of Franklin, Moose Lodge 769 of Franklin and a life member of American Society of Military Comptrollers.

Mr. Hedrick was a Korean War Veteran, having served with the 712th Transportation Railroad Operating Battalion in Yong Dong Po, South Korea.  His civil service career began in 1951 with the US Army Office Chief of Ordnance in the Pentagon.  After two years of active duty with the US Army, he returned to the Pentagon.  His duty assignments included the US Army Office, Chief of Ordnance, R & D Division, Guided Missile Branch, Pentagon, US Army Southern Area Command, Munich, Germany, and Hq Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, MD.  In 1966, he returned to the Pentagon with assignments in Hq US Army DCS for Personell, budget division, budget officer for management division.  He retired in 1986, but returned to work as a Nonappropriated Fund employee with the Department of Defense CPMS Wage Setting Division, Hoffman Building, Alexandria, VA, from 1986 to 1993.

He married Phoebe J. Clark on Feb. 8, 1958, who survives in Arlington, VA.

Also surviving are two children, Ann C. Walling of Alexandria, VA, and John H. Hedrick of Arlington, VA; two sisters, Leta Decker of College Park, MD, and Bonnie Mowery of Upper Tract; and one brother, Carroll “Skinner” Hedrick of Upper Tract.

Rev. Stanley Kile officiated funeral services on Monday at the chapel of the Basagic Funeral Home, Franklin.  Interment was in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Upper Tract with military graveside services conducted by Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial donations may be made to Upper Tract Fire and Rescue, Pendleton Manor or Cherry Hill Cemetery.

Emmalynn Simmons, Infant

A memorial service was held Monday at the Kimble Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin for Emmalynn Grace Simmons, infant daughter of Adrian A. Nicole Simmons of Raeford, NC, with Pastor Craig Richter officiating.

Surviving in addition to her parents are paternal grandparents, Debbie and Daniel Propst of Franklin; maternal grandparents, Caulette and Michael Blaszczak and Daniel Dugan of Michigan; paternal great-grandparents, Judy and Eston Propst of Moyers and Treva and Reford Simmons of Franklin; maternal great-grandparents, Joe and Suzanne Solomon of Michigan and Donna Smatko of Nanticoke, PA; paternal great-great-grandmother, Virginia Propst of Moyers; and one brother, Liam Simmons.
