Roger M. Burger, 54

Roger M. Burger, 54, ofWinona Lake, IN, died Tuesday afternoon in Belize, IN, following a snorkeling accident.

Mr. Burger graduated from Goshen High School in 1975, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1979 and later from Purdue University with a master’s degree in physics. He was owner of the Electron Shop which evolved into Inventure, an electronic design and manufacturing business.

He attended Warsaw Community Church and was a member of Goshen City Church of the Brethren and Goshen Noon Kiwanis Club, where he was a past president.

A trumpet player, Roger enjoyed reading, learning and was self taught in many areas. He loved to travel all over the world, including a visit to the Mayan ruins in Guatemala. He was concerned about the environment and was interested in sustainability.

Also surviving are a son, Zachary Andrew Burger, at home; a stepson, Chase Higgins, Warsaw; two brothers, Steven Burger and wife, Teresa of Goshen, IN, and Daniel Burger and wife, Catherine of Plainfield, IN; and a sister, Greta (Marcus Forbes) Burger, Las Cruces, N.M.

A funeral service was conducted April 19 at Goshen City Church of the Brethren with Pastor Denny Wilson of Warsaw Community Church, and Pastor Bev Weaver of Goshen City Church of the Brethren officiating. Burial followed in West Goshen Cemetery.

He was born in Brandywine on Oct. 25, 1933, the seventh child of the late Eliza Puffenbarger Taylor and George S. Taylor.

Mr. Taylor had served his country faithfully with over 28 years of Army duty. Oversees tours included Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea. Service commendations and awards included two overseas service bars, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, United Nations Service ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Korean Service Medal, Republican of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Service, Medal, Legion of Merit, Expert Rifle, Army Service Medal and Career Counselors Badge.

Also surviving are three sons of Oklahoma; a daughter of Alaska; nine grandchildren; and three sisters, Shirley Hammer of Franklin, Frances Bolton of Harrisonburg, VA and Joan Meade of Fishersville, VA.

Lou Emma Smith, 85, of Harrisonburg passed away Monday, April 16, 2012, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Sugar Grove, the daughter of the late Homer Malcolm and Maudy Jane (Hoover) Smith.

Surviving are four daughters, Mary Smiley of Verona, VA, Emma Bodkin and husband, Glenn, of Harrisonburg, VA Nancy Hamrick and husband, Warren, of Bridgewater, VA and Leafy Smith and husband, Donald, of Dayton, VA; a son, James William Smith and wife, Linda, of Bridgewater, VA; two half sisters, Leafy Simmons and husband, Allen Simmons, of Sugar Grove, and Bertha Shank and husband, Wayne, of Mount Solon, VA; three half brothers, William Smith of Staunton, VA, George Puffenbarger of Spring Creek, VA and Johnny Puffenbarger of Harrisonburg, VA; seven grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Debbie Lerz; two half brothers, Stover and Archie Puffenbarger; and a half sister, Lucy Koier.

A funeral service was conducted Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, VA with Chaplain William Staton Jr. and the Rev. Jimmy Kite officiating. Burial followed at Emmanuel Church Cemeter in Mount Solon, VA

He was born at Deer Run on October 31, 1929, the son of the late Carl (Feb. 16, 1931) and Etta Mae Evick Skiles (Feb. 20, 1988).

Mr. Skiles was a 1949 graduate of Franklin High School and was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He was a lifelong farmer and worked for 30 years as an Construction Technician for the US Soil Conservation Service.

Surviving are a brother, Leroy Skiles and Carol of Dorcas; five nieces; four nephews; seven great-nieces; and eight great-nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, William Skiles; four sisters, Rebecca Skiles, Delsie Bergdoll, Cornelia Grogg, and Theda Hevener.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin with Rev. Bob Anderson officiating. Interment was in the Skiles Family Cemetery, Deer Run.

Louise Virginia (Carper) Kisamore, age 73, of Riverton, WV passed away peacefully Monday, April 16, 2012 at her residence surrounded by her family.

She was born December 9, 1938 in Harrisonburg, VA and was a daughter of the late Charles Edward Carper and Lucille Frances (Heatwole) Carper.

She worked as a teachers aide for Head Start and was a cook for senior citizens in Riverton. She was a coordinator for the 1985 flood recovery relief for North Fork and was a volunteer EMT for the North Fork Rescue Squad. She retired from North Fork Primary Care Clinic after 20 years. After her retirement she was librarian for North Fork Elementary school and throughout her life she and her husband provided a home for foster children.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Carper Jr. and infant Jacob Carper.

Also surviving are one son, Dwayne A. Kisamore of Petersburg; three daughters, Melinda S. Polito of Hillsbough, NC, Jeanette Louise Ratliff and husband B. Keith of Riverton, Teresa Joy Kisamore of Grand Rapids, MN; eight Grandchildren, Aundrea Humphreys and husband Douglas of Shepherdstown, Jessica and Krista Polito of Hillsbough, NC, Benjamin and Brittany Ratliff of Riverton, Marianne, Elizabeth and Paul Serbyn of Grand Rapids, MN; two great-grandchildren, Oren and Amelia Humphreys; two sisters, Mandell L. Shank of Dayton, VA, Lois Baker and husband Bill of Mt Crawford, VA; two brothers: Richard Carper of Harrisonburg, VA, and Donald Carper and wife Shirley of Verona, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, with Pastor Robert Weaver and Pastor Harold Emswiler officiating. Interment will follow in North Fork Memorial Cemetery at Riverton, WV.
