IMPORTANT:

West Virginia's birth, death, and marriage records go back ONLY to 1853 at the county level. At the State level, they begin ca 1918 because a fire in 1918 destroyed the building in which they were housed. Counties were asked to hold their submissions until a new home was found; some counties later remembered to send in the 1918-20 records, others did not. Your best source for births, marriages and deaths prior to 1918 is the COUNTY.

HOWEVER!

Hampshire county's records from the pre 1866 period are unusable. In each book, approximately one quarter (1/4, 0.25) of each page is MISSING; in many instances what is missing is the NAME of the person who is the subject of the record. Additionally, much of the remaining page is often faded, or stained, and is illegible. While it is technically correct to say these records exist, they are unusable from microfilm and restricted in person at the Library of Virginia in Richmond.

The County Coordinator may be reached at: [email protected] using the SUBJ: WVHampshire. Some e-mail programs mishandle the hard-coded subject line and it never arrives in my mailbox.

So

If you e-mail the CC Please put Hampshire County in the subject line! If you do not, your message could easily be mistaken as spam or a virus.
