Dolores
"Jeanne" Tacy (Updike) Russell, 78,
died peacefully on January 31, 2010, at home with
her faithful canine companion, Brad, at her feet.
Born June 13, 1931,
in Huttonsville, W.Va., Jeanne was the daughter
of Ora Mae (Swecker) Tacy and Ray Henry Tacy of
Huttonsville, W.Va.
Jeanne married
Russell Bosworth Updike of Elkins, W.Va. in 1956
and they had three children, Marcia, Kirk, and
Alan. They divorced in 1964 and Jeanne married
Aubrey Alvin Russell of Arkansas in 1965.
They divorced and Aubrey Russell predeceased her.
Jeanne graduated
from the Chesapeake and Ohio Nursing School in
Clifton Forge, Va., in 1952. She retired
in 1993 from the Lebanon VA HJospital after working
more than 30 years as a nurse, including time
spent at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.,
Golden Clinic in Elkins, W.Va., and at the Martinsburg,
W.Va., VA Hospital. Highlights of her nursing
career also included working in the American Embassy
in Cairo, Egypt, and in one of the first dedicated
coronary critical care units in the United States
Army (Army Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Va.)
Before retiring, Jeanne started a newsletter for
nurses that served as a forum for sharing opinions,
patient care stories, and practice issues.
The newsletter was distributed nationally for
two years.
Jeanne loved genealogy
and recorded much of her family lineage, while
helping others do the same. One of her proudest
achievements was, with the help of others, establishing
the Arnold Hill Cemetery Fund, to maintain and
protect gravesites in that cemetery, which had
fallen into disrepair, outside of Elkins, W.Va.
Active in her retirement,
Jeanne traveled to more than 100 countries on
all seven continents. She also always had
several home projects in progress at all times,
from planting tomatoes and flowers, to refinishing
antiques and making quilts, to name a few.
Jeanne is survived
by her daughter, Marcia Updike of Baltimore, Md.;
son, Alan Updike and wife, Tuya of Lebanon; granddaughters,
Meghan Victoria Updike (Grana) of Uruguay, South
America, and Sarah Tuya Updike of Lebanon; and
grandson, Aidan John Updike, also of Llebanon.
Private funeral
services were held at Pleasant View Memory Gardens
in Martinsburg, W.Va., on February 3, 2010.
Jeanne was laid to rest next to her son, Kirk.
Pastor William Crowe officiated. Rohland
Funeral Home, Inc. of Lebanon handled the arrangements.
