HOBBS, LIVINGSTON
posted by Larry E. Baker on Tuesday,
April 11, 2000
- Can someone tell me exactly where Castlewood was in relation
to Mendota in Washington Co., VA ? After I recently read the
FLEENOR book on Chief (Bob) BENGE, it was mentioned several times.
My wife and I BOTH have ancestors in the Mendota area of the
North Fork. Mine were HOBBS and hers was GOBBLE. According to
the BENGE book, the Livingstons lived near the HOBBS family on
the North Fork. Been to that area twice. Truly God's country.

MCCLOUD, MEEKS,
STAHRING, STARNES,
THORNSBERRY, THORNSBOROUGH,
TUTTLE posted by Deborah
Thornsbury Keser on Monday, April 24, 2000
- I am descended from Adam Starnes and his wife Susanna (Meeks)
whose deed of land in 1795 is in the Washington Co VA deed book
one part 2 page 419, also I'm descended from Adam Starnes and
his wife Hannah whose deed is on page 412. They are related to
John Starnes of Green Co TN, oldest son and heir to Leonard Starnes,
according to the deed on page 514. I'm also descended from Conrad
Carlock who may be the Carlock who deeded land to Starnes on
page 364. This Carlock is a misspelling of the German name Gehrlach
aka Gerlach of Pennsylvania, where the German Stahring immigrants
intermarried with Conrad Gehrlach's daughter before coming to
VA. Adam Stahring Americanized his name to Starnes when he became
a naturalized American citizen. Much of my info I found in a
book called "Of them that left a name behind: a history
of the Starnes family in America", but the Gehrlach to Carlock
connection I made myself. Does anyone have information on Carlock
of Washington Co VA? Please see my website for Starnes ancestry
information. I'm descended from Adam Starnes' daughter Susannah
who married my ancestor John Thornsborough against the wishes
of his Quaker family and church and moved to Kentucky, where
the descendants are called Thornsberry. I'm also descended from
Washington Countians by the name of Tuttle, specifically Nancy
Tuttle of the 1860 Smyth Co VA census born 1794. The same census
has another Nancy Tuttle age 23 as the wife of Josiah McCloud
age 24. Looking for more information on these Tuttles. Can anyone
tell me the Tuttle heads of households on the 1820 Washington
Co VA census (page 236) and 1830 census (page 291)?
