- BOWMAN posted by Kathryn
Austin on Monday, February 8, 1999
- Greetings: I have the newspaper clippings (2) of my grandfathers
obit. Which I found tucked away in an old family Bible. They
are very fragile and yello, there are no headings or date of
the paper or clipping, I have searched both sides of the clipping
and can not tell. I will type it out for you, it reads: # 1 -Trammel,
Va., April 14. - Tea Bowman, Dickenson County pioneer, and probably
the oldest man in Southwest Virginia, died at his home at DeBusk
postoffice, on Lick Creek, five miles north of here, at 9 A.M.
rsday, April 8th. Born near Alum Wells, Washington County, in
1822, he was ninety-three years of age at the time of his death.
His father, Uriah Bowman, came from North Carolina in the early
years of the neneteeth century and settled near Alum Wells, where
he readed his family; of this family only one now survives, Mrs.
Tryphena Agnor, of Hilton Station. #2 - Trammel Viginia. Mrs
Emm Austin, Mrs. Francis Miller, Mrs. Jane Silcox, Mrs. Ellen
Silcox and Mr. Charles Bowman were called to DeBusk, on account
of the serious illness, and subsequent death of their aged fater,
Dr. Tea Bowman. Dr. Bowman, who was undoubtedly, Dickenson County's
oldest citizen, was ninety-three years of age, and settled on
the farm where he died, some forty-five years ago. Granville
White, Foy McMillian, Jessee McMillaan, O. T. Austin and many
others from Trammel attended the burial of Dr. Tea Bowman, on
Bear Ridge, urday. (typo errors left in as written) I have FTM
5.0, and have had absolutely no luck with the Bowman line. One
family member thinks Tea's wife was named Mary ?. My grandmother
Emmaline Bowman was born April 21, 1881 in Washington Co., Va.
d. 11-30- 1964. She married Nathan Ballard Austin 12-08-1898
at Nora, Dickenson, Co., Va. Nathan Ballard Austin was born 2-07-1880
in Russel Co., Va. His father was Elijah Austin b. about 1835
in Floyd. Co., Va. d. between 1910-1926 in Buchanan Co., Va.
or Dickenson Co., Va. I have had much better luck with the Austin
line. If anyone has any suggestions, or if we can share info.,
please let me know. Kathryn Austin e-mail: [email protected]
