ISLE OF WIGHT SLAVES FREED AFTER 1782
Background: In 1782, the Virginia Legislature passed the following law:
"Be it therefore enacted, That it shall hereafter be lawful for any person, by his or her last will and testament, or by any other instrument in writing . . . . . to emancipate and set free, his or her slaves, or any of them, who shall . . . . . enjoy as full freedom as if they had been particularly named and freed by this act".
Later laws gradually added more and more restrictions, but the results of this 1792 act are presented below in abstracts of deeds and wills found in Isle of Wight County.
Note that Michael Nicholls and Lenaye Howard of Utah State University abstracted the deeds and wills for Dinwiddie, Prince George, Chesterfield, Charles City, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Surry, and Sussex Counties. They are included here with their kind permission. The full list of abstracts from all counties may be found at: http://www.usu.edu/history/faculty/nicholls/manumissions/index.htm
