John H. Reagan

Reagan county, Texas was named for John Henninger Reagan.

John Henniniger Reagan was born in Sevier County, Tennessee in October 1818. His accomplishments were many, including being elected the first county judge of Henderson County, Texas in 1846. The next year he became a member of the Second Legislature of Texas. In 1857 he was nominated by the Democrats and elected United States congressman from the Eastern District of Texas. Another important accomplishment, at least to many family history researchers, he was the founder of the Texas State Historical Association.
These are but a few of his contributions. To read more about John Henninger Reagan, visit
The Handbook of Texas online.

The portrait above was painted by one of the best portrait  artists  of America, Christian F Schwerdt in 1862. Thanks to Arthur Aroustamian for submitting this photo of the portrait of John H. Reagan.
