Seguin Mourns The Loss of E. G.
    Rewards totaling $2,000 have been offered for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Eglena Diaz DeLeon, 15 whose body was found at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday on the grounds of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in downtown Seguin.
    The teenager, who was a sophomore at Seguin High School, had last been seen around 11 p.m. Friday at Fiestas Patrias, the downtown celebration of Mexican Independence Day, Diez y Seis, sponsored by the Seguin-Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
    Paul Castillo, president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, announced in a press conference held this morning that the organization is offering a reward in the case.
    "The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce wants this individual or individuals brought to justice before a judge to answer to this tragic incident," Castillo said.  "Therefore, we have made arrangements to offer a $1,000 reward --- for any information leading to the arrest, indictment and conviction of the individual or individuals involved in the brutal death of Eglena Diaz DeLeon."
    Castillo said the Hispanic Chamber's reward is being offered through the Secret Witness Committee of Guadalupe County.  Mean while, Joe H. Bruns, chairman of the Secret Witness committee, announced that the committee is offering an additional $1,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in the case.
    "This offer of reward is for information submitted before Nov. 18," the committee's announcement said.  Information can be provided by calling the Secret Witness Hotline at 372-1000 or by writing the Secret Witness Committee at P.O. Box 542, Seguin, Texas  78156.
    "All information is confidential, and all rewards are paid confidentially," the committee's announcement said.  Informants are asked to use a six digit identification number t  identify themselves.  Information also can be provided directly to the Seguin Police Department at 379-2123.
    Castillo also announced that the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has established a fund to accept donations to the girl's family.
    "We have set up a fund in memory of Eglena Diaz DeLeon to offset expenses incurred by this tragic incident," Castillo said.  "The account is set up at Victoria Bank and Trust for those wishing to contribute to this cause.
    Castillo addressed part of the Hispanic Chamber's statement to young people of the community.  "We want you to know that we share your sadness," he said,  "The Diez y Seis celebration commemorates our heritage; we give honor to brave men and women that have kept our hemisphere free."
    "We ask that you have patience while the authorities solve this case.   We ask for your cooperation in restraining from rumors floating around and that you offer any information to the Seguin Police Department."
    "Memories of a sweet little girl with a beautiful smile will be in our minds and in our hearts forever.  The death of E. G. will be vindicated.  Our prayers are with you and the family of Eglena Diaz Deleon," Castillo said.
