Man of the year

Man of the year
The year 1950 was evidence of the "balance" in the life of Seguin and Guadalupe County.  The 1950 man of the year is evidence of the fact.
Edward Sagebiel is a Seguin businessman and civic worker,  He is a member of so many committees and president of so many organizations that it would be useless to attempt to name all of the groups with which he is connected.
His choice as Man of the Year by the selection committee brings to the foreground the service side of public life.  The first Seguin Enterprise Man of the Year was Leonard Fleming, the Guadalupe County Commissioner who overcame the difficulties or paralysis and is now one of the outstanding farmers in the county, as well as a member of the official family.  The 1949 Man of the Year was Richard Jung, who was honored for his efforts in building for the county Seguin's new Compress.
The year's choice is symbolic of the well rounded life of the county.  The life that has made Guadalupe County one of the foremost in the state and Seguin the town that is pointed to with pride as "Our Town"
The Young Man of the Year is Dr. Galen E. "Doc" Johnson, Seguin Chiropractor and president of the Seguin Jaycees.  "Doc" picked up his nickname this past summer in his activities with the Seguin Raider, baseball team, which was an organization of  young men not good enough to play with the White Sox, but still wanting to play baseball.   Johnson has been active in every phase of civic work and has been one of the outstanding men to come to Seguin in the past years.
Mrs. Fred Strauss is the Woman of the Year.  She was chosen for  her work with the Seguin girl scouts and activities in the many civic functions.  Many times she has been called upon to be on a soliciting committee and she has always responded.  As one member of the selection committee put it, "There may be times Fred (her husband) has to eat downtown because his wife is busy with one of her projects, but she always has time to lend a hand when help is needed."
"The 1950 Farmer of the Year is an example of a farmer who has built a modern plant and raised a fine family at the same time."  That was a portion of a report of the agricultural committee for the selection of honors for 1950.  Alfred Kirst of Geronimo Community is the Farmer of the Year.  His outstanding work and progress in the modern methods of farming have gained him the honor.
Howard Altenhoff, Texas outstanding 4-H Club boys, is the first to get the new honor of Young Farmer of the Year.  Altenhoff started in club activities when he was a mere squirt and has built his organization into one of the finest in the state.  He now is one of the outstanding breeders of the area.
The newcomer of the year is a coach.  He came to Seguin High School as basketball coach and at the time of his selection, his team had won only one district game.  It wasn't his record that gained him the award, but the great strides he is making in building a basketball program and his work in the P.E. Department of Seguin High.  After only six months in the local system, the school board named him  P.E. Director.  If you don't know by now, it's Harry Teal.
The division restricted for coaches found some sort of a muddle.  The first tie in the history of the poll development.  Goldie Harris, coach of Ball High School Dragons, and Raymond Davis coach of the Mary B. Erskine Toreadors, are the Co-Coaches of the Year.  The  Dragons went to the Quarter-finals in the colored Interscholastic League Playoffs and had a great season.  MBE completed an undefeated season under the eyes of Davis.
The award for Outstanding Athletic Performance of the Year goes to Sam Moore of the Seguin Matadors.  The award was issued on the basis of his sideline run against San Marcos,  To retract a little, Moore took a flat pass from Sophomore Kenny Pape on the San Marcos forty and squirmed, twisted and ran away from six tacklers to score the Matador first score,  It was a great play, one that won't be equaled on the Matador Stadium turf for many years.
Now comes the part of the poll in which citizens who have rendered outstanding service through the years are honored.
The 1950 Honor Roll maks the first time than any Seguin citizen is to twice be honored by the poll.  Dr. Hugh Davis has again been awarded the Humanitarian Service Award.  The selection committee voted unanimously to again honor "Doc" Davis, for as one member states, "The people of Seguin can't thank "Doc" enough for the service he has rendered the people of the city.   He is the true friend and charity."
There are many stories and legends building up about Davis, but space wouldn't permit telling them.
    J. F. "Papa Joe" Saegert, longtime Superintendent, was voted the Community Service Award for his many services rendered.  "Papa Joe" is still interested in the youth of Seguin, although he retired two years ago.  He is still teaching in the night school division of Texas Lutheran College.  The people of Seguin will never be able to sufficently thank "Papa Joe" for all the services he has given Seguin.
The Sports Service Award goes to Otto Blumberg, who served as president of the Seguin White Sox and the Seguin Baseball Commission.  Blumberg has been active in baseball work and other projects.  Most people don't realize the time that baseball takes, but it averages close to three hours a day in the summertime.  All free work.
The last award is issued for 11 years of service.  Service by the best friend the youth of Seguin has.  The Youth Service Award goes to Lawrence Vetter ex-coach  of the Seguin matadors.  Vetter was coach of the Year in the 1948 poll and joins Dr. Davis as a repeater, although Coach is back in a different position and with a one-year layoff.  When Vetter took over the Seguin job there wasn't any organization to speak of, but today he has built a fine system.  The plan should start paying off in 1952.  It must be remembered that during the war, activities in Seguin were brought to an almost complete standtill -- there were no assistants to help develop players throught the system.  An award well deserved.
