Negro farmers in Guadalupe County
    The records in the 1939 files of Negro County Agent S. T. Toney show that the sandy land farms owned and operated by Negro farmers of Guadeloupe County yielded a $15,000 crop last year in spite of the severe drought.  833 acres of the crop showed an average production of 12 bushels of threshed nuts and a ton of peanut hay.
    The agent's records show further than in cooperation with local leaders and organizations of these farmers in 19 Negro communities of the county and involving ultimate contact with 672 Negro farm families, 238 meetings with an aggregate attendance of 6,536 adults and juniors, carried training and work that resulted in:
    110 farmers planted an average of 7.6 acres of peanuts and cooperatively purchased a peanut thresher for their own use.
    300 tons of summer (emergency) crops for feed, in addition to the regular crop which was damaged by drought.
    1,200 acres of summer grazing and improved permanent pasture, by way of weed control and clearing of underbrush.
    Sixteen boys trained to do budding and grafting on  pecan, peach and plum trees.
    Thirty three deserving Negro youths assisted in gaining entrance to the Prairie View College campus Resident Project of the NYA.
    Fifteen men and boys trained to treat, grow and grade sweet potatoes, and to store them for future market.
    Fourteen show benefits of poisoning cotton to protect from insects.
    135 Negro farm families assisted in meat curing, smoking and storing.
    1,011 Negro school children and 411 club members vaccinated as immunization from smallpox. The City of Seguin, Guadalupe County and Dr. C. B. Friday, cooperating with school administrations in coordinated plan worked out of the agent.
    510 acres of crop land protected by terraces along lines run by twenty boys acting under supervision and training.  
    80 farmers assisted in advisory manner on AAA and FFA participation.
