Gulf storm hits Seguin Sunday

Gulf storm hits Seguin Sunday
Seguin and Guadalupe County, together with other south sections of the State, experienced Sunday its worst gulf storm since 1915.  Wind reached a velocity of 70 to 80 miles and was accompanied by considerable rain.  The tropical storm struck the mainland between Houston and Corpus Christi and came up over all South Texas.  Locally, the City of Seguin was the heaviest loser when light lines and poles were torn down and the streets and parks littered with fallen limbs and trees.  Personal property damage was extensive, but as a rule this was confined to roofs, windows and shrubbery.  Business houses, warehouses, gins, etc. came in for a good share of the damage.  The Freeman interests were one of the heaviest losers, a brick warehouse in the rear of their store was blown down both rear and front and the Compress was partially unroofed.   The Old Mill and Hagn Gins also suffered damage.  Plate glass windows in all sections of the city were broken,  A large stained glass memorial window in the First Methodist Church was broken to bits and rain flooded the auditorium.  Max Starcke Park lost trees, shrubbery and several soldiers of the unit to hold a picnic there Sunday narrowly escaped injury when a tree fell on their tent.  Manager Paul Fritz's car was blocked both in rear and front on a park road and trees had to be cut away before it could be extricated.
The damage to cotton and corn is great, but not as bad as first thought.  It is estimated that about 40 to 50 per cent will be lost.  Rural sections were hit, both in fields and farm buildings.  Seguin insurance men estimate about several hundred houses, covered by insurance, will have to be repaired.  The pecan crop, short this year, is mostly lost, though some nuts remained on the trees.  The Fire Department, City Repair and Maintenance and Highway Department were doing good work all day Sunday and after the storm.
In all, Seguin was more fortunate than many of its neighbors and others in South Texas.
