Morgan Business School
Martin, Tennessee

I know there was Morgan's Business College, but I don't know if that's the one you're asking about. Zelma Pearl WILLIAMS MORGAN, b. 1886, d. 1971 was the wife of Walter MORGAN, a policeman for the city of Martin, who was shot while on duty and died July 29, 1913.  Mrs. MORGAN, who was left to raise her 2 children, attended Hall Moody College long enough to learn shorthand, typing and bookkeeping.  Around 1914, Mrs. MORGAN began to teach students in her home.  She lived on University St. - then called Mechanic St., very near Hall Moody College which was on the campus of the present-day University of TN. Later, she rented space over the Martin Drug Store (later Van's Pharmacy) and named her business school Morgan's Business College.  Her bio (see below) says she had from 15 to 20 students and that much of her teaching took  place between 1914 and the1930's, but I'm not sure exactly how long she taught.  When I knew her, she was my neighbor and was probably in her seventies. I remember a great Halloween party she held for all the children in the neighborhood  and surrounding area when I was 7 or 8.    Her  bio  can be found in
the  book "History & Families  Weakley County, Tennessee - 1823 - 1998.

Van Morgan, her son, once told me his mother's Morgan Business College was in the family home on the SE corner of Mechanic (University) and Lovelace streets, where the BP station was until 2005, and immediately next to the Wendys.  Van was later a faculty member at UTJC.......Richard Saunders
