St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Melville, Saskatchewan

This cemetery is located approximately one mile north and one-half mile east of Melville on Highway No. 47. It has been kept up extremely poorly; approximately two-thirds of the burial grounds are now under thick willow and carragana brush. Thus considerable searching through the grounds for markers was required, and there is no certainty that all were found. Also, because the grounds were so overgrown, no attempt was made to record location of markers in rows or sections. Many wooden crosses were found rotted or charred; many other stones had fallen over; still other markers had been handcrafted in metal or concrete. Inscriptions were therefore sometimes difficult to read. Attempts at reading such inscriptions are given in brackets [ ]. Only names, relevant vital dates, places, and identifying information were recorded. Although a majority of the markers were in German, no attempt to transliterate information was made.

The earliest identifiable burial in the cemetery appears to be in 1907. The latest appears to be in 1946. Although St. Paul's Lutheran congregation in Melville is still quite active, the more recent burials have been in the Melville city cemetery. I would encourage anyone making use of this list to ask the congregation (as I have done) to make an effort to upgrade and maintain this historic burial ground. A small donation to the church, designated to this purpose, might bring about a higher priority being placed on this worthy project.
