Prisoners from Sneed's
with Southeast Kentucky connections©

from issue IV/1 of Harlan Footprints
extracted & annotated by Holly Timm

Particularly prior to 1850, it is very difficult to discover much about ordinary good people. Unless an individual was a prominent figure, goodness left a very little trail to follow. On the other hand, trouble- makers tended to leave records behind, when they divorced, when they were taken to court and went several times to jail. Let it also be noted that Southeast Kentucky's mountains seemed to have held an attraction for men (women) who, to put it politely, marched to a beat of a different drum.

SNEED'S HISTORY of the KENTUCKY PENITENTIARY lists convicts sent to the State Penitentiary usually mentioning the county from which they had been sent. PRISON OUTFIT: At right is a sketch from Sneed's History of an early 19th century convict. The first prison outfit as adopted by the instition in 1800 is descibed as "in summer season country linen for the shirts, overalls for the pants and hunting shirts; the linen to be checked with deep yellow and diamonds one inch square; the hunting shirts to reach below the hips. In the winter, suits of country linsey, same make and figure, with an under jacket coat, shoes, socks, a hat made of leather with a flat crown with a brim 3 inches wide. The wearing apparel for the females to be of the same materials an dfigure as that for males and made into petticoats and jackcoats."
