Cherokee County was formed in 1897 from Union, York and Spartanburg Counties. It is surrounded by Rutherford County, North Carolina; Cleveland County, North Carolina; York County, South Carolina; Union County, South Carolina; and Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Gaffney is the county seat. It was named for the Cherokee tribe.
