Actinolite [1895] (first called Troy, then Bridgewater [1858]) - Elzevir Twp.

Founded in the mid 1850's by Billa Flint (1805-1894) who established a General Store and a saw mill (1853) there (see the Hastings County Directory 1860-61). He also built a crusher to recover gold. The Wesleyan Methodist church here was dedicated in 1866 (Rev. Thomas Cullen was the first resident minister). The village suffered from a disastrous fire in 1889 from which it never recovered.

Allan - Madoc Twp.

Allen's Mills (now called Marlbank) - Hungerford Twp.

Anson Junction - Rawdon Twp.

Named after Anson Cummings, this community developed with the coming of the railroad

Bancroft (originally called York River, also York Mills, York Branch, The Branch) - Faraday Twp.

The first settlers, the Clark family, arrived in 1853. Gerald Boyce (Historic Hastings) gives the first settlers as Gaebel, Vance, Siddon, Sweet, Harding, Sparrow, Kavanaugh. The Methodist church was built in 1872. Knox Presbyterian Church was built in 1889. These two churches united in 1918. The Christian Brethren began around 1880. St. John's Anglican Church was built in 1890.

Billa Flint, the founder of Actinolite and a Belleville businessman, built a planing mill and a wollen mill. In 1879 he had the city renamed Bancroft (after his mother-in-law).

Bangor Twp.

Always sparsely populated, early settlers (1870's) were MacGregor, Long, Payne, Cairns, Dafoe, Boyle, Riley, Allan, Cowan, McCormick, Price. Most of the population were farmers, lumbermen, or miners (Craigmont mine).

Bannockburn (first called Mumby's Mills) - Madoc Twp.

St. Bartholomew's Anglican Church erected here in the 1880's. By the 1870s Bannockburn had flour and saw mills and some gold mining. In 1889 a small gold rush as a result of a discovery of gold-bearing quartz.

Baptiste - Herschel Twp.

Bayside (first called Rhinebeck) - Sidney Twp.

Began on Lot 13, Conc. 1 of Sidney. Consisted of a tavern, blacksmith shop, store, and houses. Whites Church (Episcopal Methodist) built in 1841.

Belleville (originally called Singleton's Creek then Meyer's Creek [from 1793-1816], the village was also called the town of Moira or the village of Thurlow) - Sidney/Thurlow

First settled by Alexander Chisholm, Captain George Singleton, Lieutenant Israel Ferguson, William Bell, John Taylor, John Simpson, Captain John Meyers (first lumber and grist mills), Simon and James McNabb, John McIntosh, Roswell Leavens. Hastings Militia was formed about 1800. Belleville is the chief city and seat of government for Hastings County.

Bell Rapids - Bangor Twp.

Hastings County's most northern community. Pioneers: John Allan, George and William Cowan, John McCormick, Samuel Price (all settled before 1880).

Bell View (orginially named Big Springs) - Rawdon Twp.

Bessemer - Mayo Twp.

The Bessemer Iron mines were opened in 1906.

Big Springs (later named Bell View) - Rawdon Twp.

Located at the junction of the Central Ontario Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway. Later named Bell View, after a hotel built by John Bell.

Birds Creek - Herschel Twp.

Just north of Bancroft

Bogart (originally Bogart's Mills) - Hungerford Twp.

Abraham Bogart built a saw mill and grist mill on the Clare River about 1853.

Bonarlaw - Rawdon Twp.

Boulter - Carlow Twp.

Named after Dr. G. H. Boulter of Stirling, the County Warden in 1867 and the first member for North Hastings in the Ontario Legislative Assembly after Confederation.

Bowen Corner - Faraday Twp.

Bow Lake - Faraday Twp.

Bridgewater (first called Troy, now Actinolite) - Elzevir Twp.

Bronson - Dungannon Twp.

Begun by the Bronson Lumber Company. First settlers: Henry and George Bentley, John Cooney, John Hawkins.

Burgess Mines - Carlow Twp.

Now a ghost town since the closing of the mine.

Cannifton - Thurlow Twp.

Cardiff - Farday Twp.

Grew out of the community developed by the Canadian Dyno Mines in 1956.

Carlow Twp.

Developed out of the lumber industry which began in the 1830's. The first settlers arrived before 1865: Wilson, Mallard, Bartlett, McAllister, Halliday, Stewart, Allison, Hynes, Telford, Towns.

Cashel Twp.

Early settlers were Gunter, Trumble, Kemp, Weese, Kelly, Cunningham. A Free Methodist was erected in 1894.

Centreview - Bangor Twp.

Coe Hill - Wollaston Twp.

The seat of municipal government.

Cooper - Madoc Twp.

Corbyville - Thurlow Twp.

Cordova Mines - Marmora Twp.

Crookston - Huntingdon Twp.

Culbertson's Wharf (now Deseronto) - Tyendinaga Twp.

Deloro - Marmora Twp.

Grew out of the gold rush days in Hastings County. Mining and refining were carried on here from 1896 until 1961.

Deseronto (first known as Culbertson's Wharf, then Mill Point, then Bowen, then Mill Point again) - Tyendinaga Twp.

Originally part of the Tyendinaga Mohawk Indian Reserve. Developed a large logging operation by the R. H. Rathbun Company. Early settlers: Aylesworth, Gaulin, Bogart, Richardson, Vandervoort, Naylor, Sager. Deseronto was incorporated as a town in 1889. Much of the town was destroyed in the fire of May 25, 1896.

Detlor - Dungannon Twp.

Dungannon Twp.

The first settlement was established at L'Amable in 1870 (though some settlers were there as early as the 1850's) by a group of Scottish settlers. A Presbyterian church was built in 1881. Early pioneers were Henderson, Maguire, Tait.

Lands were first offered for sale in 1821 but even by 1851 there were still very few settlers. Gerald Boyce (Historic Hastings) gives some of the early settlers as Duquette, Fobert, Genereaux, Latendre, Courneyea, Murphy, Nolan, Kelly, Kehoe, Hailstone, Harrison, Hicks, Jackson, McCallum, McDonald, Maxwell, Miles, Moore, Ross, Thompson, Watson, and Wiggins.

Established as a separate township in 1858. Billa Flint was its first Reeve.
