FURTHER INFORMATION FOR WEB HOSTING |
Here are the 4 programs I use for running a website. For a volunteer just answering email these won't be needed. But if you are working with photographs you will need #3 and if you are making web pages you will need #2. And anyone uploading files will need WS-FTP.
Email me with further questions. Vikki Gray

| 1 | WS-FTP |
This is a utility program to upload files from your computer to the server. Available on www.tucows.com as freeware ($0) or shareware ($30). This is only needed if you plan to upload data to the server. |

A must if you are going to do any web page designing. Dreamweaver is the easiest to use and the best - about $75 for a used or educational version on Ebay. You need at least Dreamweaver 2, but Dreamweaver 3 or 4 would be preferable. I can help you with Dreamweaver. Adobe GoLive would be an alternative but I don't know the program. FrontPage - I threw mine out - if you want to torture yourself, this is the program for you. Plus you won't learn much about web design either. But if you don't have anything else - it will work. |
| 3 | Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro |
If you are going to work with images and photos, you will need either: Adobe Photoshop - Expensive but the best. You can get the educational version which includes Photoshop (bitmap/vector graphics), Illustrator(vector/line art), GoLive 4(html editor) and LiveMotion (video movies) go for about $300. I can help you with these programs. or Paint Shop Pro is available for $99 on www.tucows.com. I have seen some very nice graphics done in Paint Shop Pro but I don't know the program and you will have to learn it on your own. I think there are plenty of website resources to help you. You may be able to get a used version of either of the above on Ebay. |

MS Word or |
For those of you who just want to submit data but don't want to get involved with web design. When you type text into a table in either Word or Word Perfect, you have the option of saving the text as an html(web page) file. Then the webpage fairies(like me) can pretty it up. |
