Sequoyah County was created at Oklahoma statehood in 1907. The land had previously been part of the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. The county was named in honor of Sequoyah, creator of the Cherokee syllabary. The county seat is Sallisaw. This website was created to aid anyone with a historical or genealogical interest in Sequoyah County. Donations of materials, volunteers for look-ups, suggestions for further research, etc. are welcome! Please contact me. All donated material wil be credited to the submitter. |
