The Hartshorne Sun Thursday, May 26, 1938 D.D. Forman Has Military Funeral
Mr. Forman is dead. That expression spread quickly and with deep feeling over the city of Hartshorne Friday night bringing sorrow to a host of friends and relatives who knew and loved him so well. A long, useful life of 93 years for D.D. Forman was ended at 6:05 that afternoon with his two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Easton of Shreveport, LA. and Mrs. Berta James of Hartshorne, at his bedside. As was his special desire, he was left practically alone the last few days of his life yet friends, neighbors, and his daughters stood ready and willing to give any service instantly. His health had been excellent for his age, the last illness of a few days' duration. The writer was associated with Mr. Forman in such a way as to know that he was ready and willing to go. Recently he spoke very tenderly of going out to meet the Man of Galilee. He was one of the most conscientious men I ever knew; honest to a fault, charitable, truthful, ever thoughtful of his fellow man. His life was well balanced, having been developed mentally, morally, physically and spiritually, an excellent example for the young generation. The American Legion had charge of the funeral, which was strictly military. Promptly at three o'clock Saturday, that organization formed in line in front of the house. They were bearing the U.S. flag on one side and the emblem of the American of the Legion on the other. Members of the Legion carried the flag draped casket to an open truck which conveyed it to the grave. There a prayer was read by Joe Brown, member of the Legion, former commander of the local post. The firing squad fired three volleys over the grave and taps was sounded by Pat Carley, a Boy Scout. Mr. Forman had gone to join comrades of the war and to be with The Man of Galilee. He is survived by two daughters and two sons, Mrs. Berta James of Hartshorne, Mrs. H.D. Easton, Shreveport, LA., Jay W. Forman of San Francisco, CA and Joe Forman, of New York City. -Written by Miss Virginia Claycomb
