INTRODUCTORY.

This is the first edition of R.L. Polk & Co.’s South McAlester City Directory, and is presented to subscribers and citizens generally with the utmost confidence that it reflects credit upon the publishers as well as the progressive and enterprising city which it represents.

With every facility for the prompt and accurate accomplishment of such a task, and with an experience of 35 years in directory making, aided by a system perfected by long years of patient study and the assistance of a competent staff, makes it possible for the publishers to produce a directory that will compare in every respect with any work of similar character in the larger metropolitian cities.

A personal canvass of every ward, street, block and house, the careful compilation of ever day’s return, the checking of every name twice, the careful grand revision after all the field work is done, all the painstaking and minute investigations and corrections employed to insure accuracy and completeness are no small nor easy task.

The city directory is a publication in which the entire population is represented and interested. It is used by all classes and conditions of people in every locality in the city and by every stranger that comes within the city limits every day in the year. The use of city directories is becoming more general and their great importance as business factors is now universally recognized. There is nothing more conductive to the development and extension of commerce than an easy means of communication, such as is afforded by a complete and reliable city directory. It is an unexcelled medium for use in the purchase of goods, and every business man should avail himself of the opportunity which it offers for the full and proper classification of his business and for keeping his card where it may be found at all times by those who seek such information. Every business and professional man should spend some time examining the city directory. It will be found full of profitable suggestions.

Page 8:

Keep the city directory in a convenient place for frequent reference, and invite your customers to use it. You will extend your acquaintance and advertise your business and your establishment will be more popular and profitable.

This directory contains the names of all adult citizens of South McAlester, with their occupation, place of business and dwelling, also a complete classified business directory. Pages 9 to 21 contain what is technically termed "Miscellaneous Information," such as government of the city, embracing the names of the officers, ect. Then follow in regular alphabetical order the lists of Asylums and Hospitals, Banks, Cemeteries, Churches, Clubs, Colleges and Schools, Grand Army of the Republic, Newspapers, Postoffices, Railroads, Societies, Street and Avenue Guide.

A Classified business directory of all persons doing business in South McAlester will be found on pages 139 to 168 of the work. This classified business directory will be appreciated as a useful purchaser’s guide, both by residents of South McAlester as well as others who look to this market for supplies.

POPULATION.

The estimate of population from a directory canvass made by R. L. Polk & Co. is of much interest and is generally regarded as being nearly correct. There are in South McAlester portion of this directory 3, 372 names, which multiplied by 2 1/2 to represent married women and children who are not included in a directory canvass indicates a population of 8, 420 for South McAlester at the present time. The city is in a prosperous and healthy condition and a rapid and substantial growth is assured.

Thanking our patrons and the public for courtesies extended to our representatives while they were gathering data and soliciting patronage, we remain,

Respectfully the publishers,

R. L. Polk & Co.
