Melvin was born 05 February 1847 in Carthage, Hamilton, Ohio (now part of Cincinnati).  He died on 30 November 1915 in Kenton, Hardin, Ohio.  He married Rebecca Hannah Mitchell on 19 February 1873 in Richland County, Ohio.  According to research, Melvin was probably living in Mansfield sometime between 1870 and 1873.
