James Wine Family

James Wine was born in 1775 in Farquier County, Virginia.  His wife was born between 1780-1790; her name is unknown.  He moved his family to Cheshire Township, Gallia County, Ohio around 1810.  A neighbor named Travis Wine of about the same age may have been James’ brother.  James later moved to Benton Township, Hocking County, Ohio.  In September 1834, he purchased 40 acres on a federal land patent.  This land is located on Chestnut Grove Ridge in Benton Township.  His sons John, Linza, Harvey, James H., Leander and William also purchased land on federal patents.  The family’s land purchases totaled almost 600 acres in Hocking and Vinton Counties.

James Sr., his sons John, Linza and Thomas, and daughter Mary moved to Bates County, Missouri around 1850.  James, John and Linza purchased over 1000 acres in Missouri, by way of federal land patents and Missouri swampland patents.  Swampland was purchased for $.02 to $3.00 per acre.  James is thought to have died soon after moving to Missouri.
