Guy Shoemaker

The body of Guy Shoemaker, aged 31, of near Harrisburg was brought to the funeral home of H. Gleason Roberts last Saturday. Mr. Shoemaker accidentally shot himself and died instantly while hunting near his home. He left Friday morning and when he did not return in the evening a search was made but to no avail. It was about 11:30 that his body was discovered lying in ditch in a dense thicket. The gun was apparently discharged while passing through the thicket the whole load entering his body. Part of the discharge struck his watch which had stopped at 9:15. It is thought the accident occurred at that time. Dr. Hoyt, the Coroner, was summoned and his verdict was death by the accidental discharge of the gun. Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church at New Market Monday afternoon with burial in the Baptist cemetery. He leaves his wife and three children, ages 8, 9, and 11. Mrs. Shoemaker is the daughter of Mrs. Starling Badgley and the granddaughter of Wiley Badgely, living here. Her father was accidentally killed a number of years ago by a falling tree. The Shoemakers lived for a number of years in this community on the Herbert E. Roberts farm and are well known here.
