The Oliver Harris Diary
Oliver Harris was an
early pioneer of New Market Township. His contribution to the township
and the county and the country can be seen in his diary and a legacy of
descendants that pioneered Oregon and Indiana.
He was born 2 July 1780 in Cumberland County, NJ and moved to Highland County, Ohio in 1810. He participated in the local militia during the War of 1812, and his son and grandsons were Civil War veterans. It’s also possible that one grandson was Civil War causality but to date there is no documented proof. Oliver began his diary in 1796 and continued it up until his death in 1845 with the final entry being made by his youngest son, Robert. Oliver and his second wife Mary Kezer Harris along with sons Samuel and Robert and their wives, and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson are all buried in the New Market Baptist Church Cemetery. The diary is now in possession of the Highland County Historical Society in Hillsboro, Ohio. |
